U.S.S.

THIS SECTION IS ON HOLD – FOR FULL DETAIL ABOUT U.S.S. SHIPS IN HAITIAN WATERS, PLEASE ORDER Peter C. Jeannopoulos’ Catalog. About 200 ships covered and 530 cancels. See Order section.

Below is a list of known United States Navy ships (USS) that have covers with cancels with Haitian town names or Haitian territorial water names. The list will be updated as new information comes in. The dates listed in bold are the confirmed dates (with covers shown in this listing), in bold italic are confirmed (seen by editor while on sale or in a collection but no image of cover is provided at this time), and in italic with (*) are reported but not seen or confirmed (those date in italic with *, serve as a potential reference nothing else).

Some listings have been made before, but they are riddled with errors and are not reliable. An example is the USS Astoria that had a reported date of 1929, but that ship was not in the U.S .Navy at that time. It turns out the date  is 1939 (USS-CA-34) and not 1929. The USS Arctic is another case where the reported date was 05.18.1927, but is in fact 03.18.1927, wrong names: Trevor for Trever, Alwyn for Aylwin etc.

Active dates are those during which the vessels were in the services of the U.S. Navy.

Note: The cover for the USS Barry has a handwritten note saying it was sunk on 1945 May 25. That is incorrect. It was hit and severely damaged by a Japanese Kamikaze mission on that date indeed, but it was not sunk until 1945 June 21. During that one month period it was used as a decoy.

We thank very much the collectors that have and are providing images to make this section as accurate as possible (if you spot typos or errors please signal them for correction). Do compare the date of your cover to make sure it is earlier than the one listed below (if there is a date provided) before submitting your cover. Dates in plain italic are not considered the earliest known dates and you should send scan of your cover, as that prooven date will be the one recorded. Scans of covers should be made at 300 dpi and emailed to: thehaitijournal@gmail.com

I sense that this listing is developing into a truly comprehensive listing.
The listing of basic facts and the images of ships makes it a most useful and handy reference.
Look forward to the next update.

  3. Just found this site and the USS listings. This is a great beginning as I have been capturing scans of Haiti-visitors for several years–sort of a electronic catalog of what is known. I have several covers of ships not on the list here CULGOA, PRAIRIE, VERMONT.

Will the list format handle ships with cancels in different Haitian ports?
Previous lists have differentiated between proof positive and covers from ships known to have been in port from postcards and datelines and/or from Ship Log Books–will this list accept both?

As Editor of the Universal Ship Cancellation Society LOG, I would also recommend listing the cancel types according to the LOCY classification system.

Will submit scans and data to assist in updates and completion

    • Thank you for your interest in our listing. Yes, the listing on the site is going to be greatly expanded. We will be listing all available data, including ships with different ports of call. Having the cancel types according to the LOCY cataloguing system is a great idea that I will integrate on the site. – Abdel Nassar
